Below is a condensed version of Dr. Tom’s history:
Dr. Tom grew up in Mississippi, being saved at age 9, he was called to preach at age 12, and pastored his first church when he was only 19.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Sacred Music from Mississippi College.
He received the Bachelor of Divinity with Greek and Hebrew and the Master of Divinity degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
He earned his Doctor of Theology from Luther Rice University and Seminary of Atlanta. He has post-graduate studies in the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute; the American Institute of Hypnology and the Association of Clinical Hypnotists, the Billy Graham School of Evangelism; the School of the Prophets of First Baptist Church, Dallas; and the Southern Baptist International Mission Board’s Cross-Cultural Training.
He has served several large churches in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia as Minister of Music and Youth or as Senior Pastor.
Dr. Tom retired from Monumental Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia in 2004 after almost 19 years as Senior Pastor; his wife Janie retired as the church’s Music Director.
Dr. Tom married the former Janie Johnson of Suffolk, VA. They have a daughter, Christy Stawarz & husband John with 4 grandchildren: Jon Thomas (J.T.), Micah, Christopher, and Michaela.
For 44 plus years they have been involved with and served on the Executive Board for the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Jamaica where they have 2 foster daughters and a foster son who are deaf.
He has been named Governor’s Goodwill Ambassador to Jamaica by the governors of South Carolina, Tennessee, & Virginia. He is listed in the Chattanooga Who’s Who, Personalities of the South, and was named International Man of the Year by International Biographies of Cambridge, England. Tom has been a church organist and was pianist for the South Carolina State Evangelism Conference of the SBC.
Dr. Tom and Janie have authored 3 technical “church growth manuals” together, and Dr. Tom has published 2 more in addition. They also sing solos and duets, and their daughter Christy joins them for trios.
Before coming to God’s Storehouse Baptist Church, his ministry was in serving as supply or Interim Pastor in 5 local churches, teaching Bible studies at churches and community colleges, writing a newspaper weekly Bible column which he emails to around 500 people in 25 countries. He has led or participated in Bible Land or mission trips to Jamaica, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Thailand, New Zealand, and Australia. He is Professor of Biblical Studies for RockbridgeSeminary.edu teaching online to students all over the world.After searching throughout the U.S. for a pastor, our church learned we only had to look a few miles down the road. Dr. Tom and Janie reside in Prince George County in Petersburg, about 26 miles from our church.
